Click Start, then Control Panel, now scroll down to Sounds and Audio Devices and open that program.
As you begin the process, you'll have (probably) 2 options regarding your system, be sure your settings are correct in that the equipment you're using is in the proper slot (you'll understand once you see it).
There are 3-4 ';checks'; you'll make, it's all very sensible and easy to follow. Basically, you're troubleshooting your audio settings.
Once done, restart your computer and you should be fine.
